The Youth Service program (whose alumni include Manny Ramirez and Frank Rodriguez) remains a major factor in amateur baseball, but it pretty much stands alone in New York, the nation’s largest city

"Youth Service team cruises to AAABA title - newspaper headline- We were confident that we were going to take it all the way, for our coach and for our team. We represent a family. We’ve been together for a long time and I think we deserve it
Julio Lugo, graduated 1994, and Johnstown (Pennsylvania) Tribune-Times
Thanks for everything. You were a friend and a father when I really needed one, and I am very grateful. I will never forget all the things you did for me." Mel, aside from my real father, you have been the most influential person in my life, and there will always be a special place in my heart for you.
David Wallace, graduated 1990
Thank you for all you have done for me. I could not have done it (graduate College) without you. Thanks for helping all of us.
Julio Jimenez, graduated 1992
Thank you for sending me to college and for taking me away from New York. Mel, you are like a father to me. No more of: ‘No stupid remarks’, ''No trouble’. Thank You Dad".
Eric Espinal, graduated 1998
I just wanted to say that this organization has helped me to understand the importance of succeeding. My coaches: Liza and Tony Diaz help a lot in practice. I really appreciate all that they do to help. Love you Liza - you are the best. Tony: what up dog. Thank you for helping me.
Joel Vargas, current YSL youth member
I think Youth Service is the best organization I've ever been a part of. It has shown me the significance of succeeding.
Wagnel Meran, current YSL youth member I can honestly say that Youth Service is so far the best thing that has happened to me. It has giving me a chance to succeed in life, not only in sports, but in the real world. So if you want to attempt to be somebody, and you are part of YSL, I would say you are in the right program.
Randy Guzman, current YSL youth member
To all members of Youth Service: GOD BLESS! Keep shining the light. What's the word? "HARD WORK" What's the name? "BLUE MACHINE"!!!!.
David Ramirez, graduated 1987
I take time out from my so busy life to thank the Zitters for everything that they have done for me and for the rest of the gang that came thru the YSL program. I send my condolences to Mel and his family for the passing of Mr. and Mrs. Zitter. Mel, has always been hard on us and expected perfection at all times. Because of that, a lot of former players don't know how to express their gratitude towards him. I know that the Manny Ramirez, Alex Arias, and Shawon Dunstons of the world go every day thinking how those long hours in Ditmas JHS helped them become the citizens that they are today. Like the late Jim Valvano always said," don't give up, don't ever give up!" Thank you, Mel, for teaching me not to give up when I could have easily done so.

Youth Service is #1, and is always going to be #1. Youth Service is an organization that pushes you to work hard to get somewhere. Since I've been part of Service, all the counselors, coaches and parents always tell me to work hard, and never give up, and that dreams do come true. For every new or old member, Youth Service is the best organization for kids in New York!!
Yoserqui Arias, current YSL youth member
I feel privileged to have spent time with the YSL organization as a youngster. I can tell you that my experience kept me out of trouble as well as helped me develop into who I am today. Being part of YSL was one of my greatest experiences growing up. I had the opportunity to be with kids from all walks of life. I'd like to thank Mel Zitter and Billy Blitzer for the support when I needed it most. Keep up the good work, you're helping a whole lot of kids bring value home when none is provided. Thanks to an awesome organization.

Wow! I was thrilled when I came across this page cause it brought back so many memories. I was part of the organization for about 4 years, and I must say it was an experience because what I learned at Youth Service I was able to apply to life. Hey, I had to, or it was 50 sprints in the outfield. I learned discipline and that discipline, even though I never made it to the majors, made me a whole better person in life. Thank you.
Richie Maldonado, graduated 1981
Hello to everyone out there in YSL land....As a single parent, this was the best youth program I could have had my son a part of. The challenges were stupendous, staff involvement with him was excellent, as well as keeping a "heads up" with the family. We all had such wonderful times. Thanks to all your hard work and keeping on top of things.
Marie Aponte-Rodriguez, mother of Frank Rodriguez, graduated 1991
Thanks for all you have done for Jason. Playing with Youth Service was the greatest experience of his life. Not only did he develop as a ballplayer; but, also as a person. Not only did he play with the most talented bunch of ballplayers he has have ever played with; but also with the nicest and most respectful. Last but not least, thanks to you and your staff for all the hours and time spent with Jason always being there for my son when he needed you. If I have one regret, it's that I wished I had started all my kids with Youth Service right from the beginning. Thanks again - and all the best in the future.
Dan Conlisk, father of Jason Conlisk, graduated 2000
Youth Service and Mel are a part of my life forever. Thanks to YSL, I got to get out of the City. I don't know of any other program that would do so much for inner-city kids. If it were not for YSL I would not be the person I am today. Mel, I would like to thank you for everything you have done for me. Thank you a million times over. "WHEN YOU JOIN YSL YOU JOIN A FAMILY OF GUYS THAT WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR YOU, SO LONG AS YOU'RE NOT ON MEL's **** LIST".
