  Who We Are

Established in 1954, The Youth Service League was created to encourage area youth to participate in wholesome activities that would foster positive development. In our papers of incorporation, the purposes for YSL still hold true:

“To encourage youth to participate in and to stimulate the interest of youth and foster interest in and promote the civic work in the community and the moral and mental improvement of youth; To fight juvenile delinquency by directing the youth into wholesome activities; To coordinate and act with any existing organizations devoted towards the furtherance of youth welfare; To endeavor to secure and enlist as member of this corporation individuals who are devoted to the cause of better government with a view, insofar as possible, to eliminate juvenile delinquency.”

As a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the development of youth ages 6-20; we are the largest youth sports organization in the New York City area.

What We Do

Through meetings, counseling sessions, tutoring, and various sports activities, we learn and are able to strongly and positively impact the youngsters and young adults in our charge. We are then able to push them in positive directions, help them in school and in dealing with, and growing from, the diverse cultures, races, and religions of New York. By means such as report cards, family meetings, meetings with school personnel, and with our specific Kids, we are able to make learning a positive, and positively impact the overall growth process. Our older Kids serve a very import role in this process, for though them our younger members see the positive results of hard work, discipline, and dedication to a positive and attainable goal. We deliberately bring our College-level young adults to meet with our younger Kids, and to tell them this could also be them, in a few or several years.

The Youth Service program (whose alumni include Manny Ramirez and Frank Rodriguez) remains a major factor in amateur baseball, but it pretty much stands alone in New York, the nation’s largest city
